This morning in Arkansas, Carroll County Deputy Clerk Jane Osborn issued the first marriage licenses to same-sex couples following yesterday’s judges ruling overturn the state constitutional ban.

The case, Wright v Arkansas, challenges a statute passed in 1997 and a constitutional amendment to the Arkansas Constitution, approved by voters in 2004. Both exclude same-sex couples from getting married in Arkansas and forbid the state from recognizing same-sex marriages from other jurisdictions.

In the ruling, Judge Piazza wrote, “It has been over forty years since Mildred Loving was given the right to marry the person of her choice. The hatred and fears have long since vanished and she and her husband lived full lives together; so it will be for the same-sex couples. It is time to let that beacon of freedom shine brighter on all our brothers and sisters.  We will be stronger for it.”

Congratulations to all the plaintiffs in this case, as well as lead attorney Cheryl Maples and co-counsel Jack Wagoner, on this historic victory!

Kristen Seaton and Jennifer Rambo of Fort Smith were the first couple to receive their marriage license today at a courthouse in Eureka Springs.
