June’s been Pride Month in the US, and this year’s been a chance to look back on recent significant advancements in marriage equality in several states.

But elsewhere, life just keeps getting more difficult for gay people.

Last Week Tonight host John Oliver was keen to point this out as he invited Ugandan LGBTI rights advocate Pepe Julian Onziema on his show for a update on the situation at home.

Onziema is brave to speak out in a country where legislation was recently passed that punishes homosexual activity with imprisonment for life.

“Many of us have suffered, from evictions, beatings on the streets, arbitrary arrests, and so on,” explains Onziema. “I look over my shoulder every day.”

And as it turns out, America had its part to play in the persecution, thanks to a lengthy visit by Christian pastor Scott Lively. He told Ugandan authorities that gay people are out to ‘recruit’ others, and equated homosexuality with paedophilia.
